For 19 months during the Cold War, John Eldred was assigned to Berlin. There he was sergeant of a platoon which every four months was assigned a 30 day duty within Spandau Prison to guard the sole inmate Rudolf Hess, who had been sentenced to life at the Nuremberg Trial.
